The following events represent LAF's collaborations with other organizations that share our goals of connecting Forum members with other leaders and with issues important to our region. These evening Forums, on important and timely topics of interest to the Asheville and Western North Carolina communities, are always free and open to the public.

February 2, 2012: Evening Forum
A Celebration of Appalachian Music

Leadership Asheville Forum and the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement will host an evening celebrating Appalachian Music, including its connections to Scotland and the Scotch-Irish who immigrated to our region. Theprogram is free and open to the public, and will begin at 6:30 pm on Thursday, February 2, 2012 in the Manheimer Room, Reuter Center of the NC Centerfor Creative Retirement on the campus of UNC-Asheville.
The program will feature Dr. Douglas and Darcy Orr, with musical support byJoe and Karen Holbert. All four are accomplished performers of Celtic and Appalachian music. Dr. Orr served as President of Warren Wilson College from 1991 until his retirement in 2006, and is co-authoring a book on Appalachian music with Fiona Ritchie, host of NPR’s “The Thistle & Shamrock”. Darcy is the art editor of the book, which will be published by the UNC Press. The performance will last about an hour and will be followed by a half-hour for questions and discussion. Please join us for an informative and entertaining evening.

February 10, 2011 - Generation Ageless: The Boom That Won’t Go Bust
As the Baby Boom generation reaches retirement age, we’re hearing a lot of dire predictions about what they may face – from depleted nest eggs caused by the recent financial crisis to drastic reductions in Social Security. But their future may not be so dark, after all, according to Baby Boom Expert Dr. J. Walker Smith, executive chairman of the Futures Company. Dr. Smith will be the featured speaker at a free evening forum, co-sponsored by Leadership Asheville Forum, and the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement on Thursday, February 10, 2011. His topic: “Generation Ageless: The Boom that Won’t Go Bust.” Following his remarks, Dr. Smith will answer questions from the audience.

J. Walker Smith received his Ph.D. in Mass Communications from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He is co-author of a book about baby boomers and was a featured expert on Tom Brokaw’s recent CNBC special, “Boomer$.”

October 14, 2010: Guantanamo – The Law! The Dilemma! The Options! Come away understanding why it’s been so hard to close Guantanamo. George Walker, Professor of Law at Wake Forest University, and Frank Goldsmith, a local attorney and representing several detainees at Guantanamo on a pro bono basis, will define the law and discuss America’s right to seize and retain suspected enemy combatants indefinitely…without charges.

October 12, 2010: Evening Event –co-sponsor with Asheville/Buncombe League of Women Voters, NCCCR, others

The League of Women Voters of Asheville/Buncombe County & NCCCR-Reuter Center
Presents a “Meet & Greet” & NC House Candidate Forum!!
When: Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010, 6:30-8:00 pm. The forum will feature candidates for NC House 114,115 & 116.
This will be a question and answer format, and will include a short summary from each candidate.
Following the Candidate Forum there will be a Meet & Greet, 8:00-9:30 pm. The Meet & Greet is an informative yet informal way to meet candidates running for US House District 11, NC Senate District 48 & 49, District Attorney 28, Sheriff of Buncombe County, Clerk of Superior Court, Superior Court Judge- District 28 and District Court Judge- District 28.

  • October 29, 2009: "Understanding Healthcare Reform 2009" is an inter-generational forum designed to provide information on current health care reform legislation to the general public. The event is free and open to the public. Hear some of the history of our current health care system and listen to an update on the status of health care reform legislation and how it will affect United States citizens and providers.

    A panel of representatives from the Asheville community including consumers, physicians, hospitals, and the insurance companies will identify proposed changes in health care policies and discuss implications for their different stake-holder groups. Afterwards, panelists will field pre-submitted questions from Moderator David Hurand, of radio station WCQS, on topics including: health care costs, the insurance industry, implications for prevention and quality of care, and the question of universal coverage.

    Finally, the panelists will welcome written questions from the audience.

    Following "Understanding Healthcare Reform 2009," the Center for Creative Retirement will host a dialogue series for the next three consecutive Thursdays, November 5, November 12, and November 19, from 4:30pm to 6:30pm. This dialogue series will serve as an opportunity for community members to discuss their opinions, brainstorm ideas, and seek to create viable solutions to contribute to health care reform.

  • October 8, 2008: 2nd Amendment activist Bob Levy speaks on "Gun Control: The U.S. Supreme Court and the 2nd Amendment". Mr. Levy was co-counsel for the suit that overturned Washington D.C's handgun ban and set the stage for a renewed national debate on the Second Amendment's "right to bear arms" clause.
