Evening Forums

The following events represent LAF's collaborations with other organizations that share our goals of connecting Forum members with other leaders and with issues important to our region. These evening Forums, on important and timely topics of interest to the Asheville and Western North Carolina communities, are always free and open to the public.

  • October 29, 2009: "Understanding Healthcare Reform 2009" is an inter-generational forum designed to provide information on current health care reform legislation to the general public. The event is free and open to the public. Hear some of the history of our current health care system and listen to an update on the status of health care reform legislation and how it will affect United States citizens and providers.

A panel of representatives from the Asheville community including consumers, physicians, hospitals, and the insurance companies will identify proposed changes in health care policies and discuss implications for their different stake-holder groups. Afterwards, panelists will field pre-submitted questions from Moderator David Hurand, of radio station WCQS, on topics including: health care costs, the insurance industry, implications for prevention and quality of care, and the question of universal coverage.

Finally, the panelists will welcome written questions from the audience.

Following "Understanding Healthcare Reform 2009," the Center for Creative Retirement will host a dialogue series for the next three consecutive Thursdays, November 5, November 12, and November 19, from 4:30pm to 6:30pm. This dialogue series will serve as an opportunity for community members to discuss their opinions, brainstorm ideas, and seek to create viable solutions to contribute to health care reform.

For more information, call the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement at 828/232-5181.
Note that this Forum is Thursday, October 29, 2009, 4:30pm-6:30pm, The Manheimer Room, The Reuter Center, UNC-Asheville and is FREE and Open to the Public.
